After finding out her best friend is a heroin addict Emily Murphy seeks to help her first by reform and then to sweep the monster from the nation. She is then given the job of magistrate for the family court – the first female to sit on the bench in the whole British Empire. She decides real change can come from the changing of the laws rather than the implementing of them so she seeks out to become a senator – there’s a small matter of her not being legally “a person” but surly that won’t get in the way.

Development History

High & Splendid Braveries was work-shopped by Bob White at the Banff playRites Colony. Subsequently it was work-shopped by Ken Cameron at Alberta Playwrights Network. Two scenes from the play were read as part of Play Writes Ink and were directed by Jim DeFelice.
